Synchro/SimTraffic is an easy-to-start and popular software in the transportation engineering industry to model traffic operations. It is user friendly, and a lot of its features are self-explanatory.

In this series of articles, I'll share the process of modeling traffic in Synchro/SimTraffic. Having learned from my own experience, the tips and instructions included in this post will aim to be easy to follow, even for beginners. For readers that already have experience using the software, the the purpose of this series will be minimizing modeling errors and reducing the effort of Quality Control (QC), especially for consulting firms.

The example used in the series will be a ten-intersection study area in Portland, Oregon. It includes signalized intersections, unsignalized intersections and freeway on and off ramps. A google earth file (.kml) and a Synchro 8 file (.syn) are available HERE.

The modeling of a study area should happen in the order listed. Remember to finish all the modeling steps before moving on to the next.

1. Create study area map (Bing map region) and set reference point.

Before you start, you may want to consider keeping the map region in a reasonable size because Synchro may run slowly and even crash if the model has too large a map region. For a large study area, you can create multiple map regions to cover the entire study area instead of using just one single map region. You can hide the background images (map regions) to run the model faster when you don't use them.

I recommend setting the reference point at the center of one of the key intersections, where you can easily find the remember. It helps you find the location if you mistakenly set the reference point at a wrong location, especially when you have multiple region maps.

2. Draw road alignment, and update number of lanes for each movement.

When you first draw the roads, the alignment doesn't need to be very accurate since you can modify it later. When entering number of lanes, use the number of lanes at the stop bar and do not worry about the number of turning pockets for now. Remember to include any de facto LT or RT lanes. You can add street name at this time and it will help you navigate faster.

Here is an example of a freeway off-ramp. The off-ramp diverge needs to be changed to un-signalized control type,

The turning speed also needs to be updated to off-ramp speed.

4. Update pocket lane and length, channelized turning movements, and taper length. How to delete apps on your mac.

The quickest way to get the pocket length (and the taper length) is measuring in Google Earth (GE). Always check in the field to see if there's any update since the GE may not have the most recent aerial image. By typing the storage length, Synchro generally will designate one storage lane by default as shown in the picture below. You can update the number of storage lanes if needed. The Right Turn on Red (RTOR) is very important. Synchro allows RTOR by default, you may need to change accordingly to match the field operations. Remember to un-check the location where RTOR is not allowed.

For channelized RT, a) choose the correct control type, b) update the radius, and c) update number of dedicated RT receiving lane.

5. Turn on Intersection Paths, and update the alignment in simulation tab.

The intersection paths feature can be turned on or off under the menu Options - Map settings - Intersection Paths.

In simulation tab, you can find lane alignment setting to set the correct paths for each movement.

6. Minor adjust the intersection to the correct location, and update the speed limits.

If needed, you can adjust intersection locations to better match the background image(s). The picture below shows an overview of the study network after all adjustments.

Sometimes you may need to change the default direction to show the alignment correctly. There are eight default directions for you to choose in Synchro. You may need to trick the software when you have an irregular geometry. Always remember to update the corresponding turning speed when you have an irregular movement. You may also want to update the saturation flow rate since it will affect the capacity calculation.
